Estimated reading time: 1 min.
We were halfway up
the concrete library steps,
when he stopped
tugged my hand
and pulled me back
down two steps.
“See there!” he said,
as he leaned over
the rain stained ground.
He pointed to a tiny
oblong leaf,
half his pinky,
dull yellow before browning.
He carefully picked it up,
cradling it in his palm.
When we straightened and
climbed the stairs
I saw the radiant
yellow and orange maples
nearby
as I said, “You really like that leaf!”
He kept it close and safe
the car ride home
and all afternoon.
Commenting on it, I said,
“Something about that leaf
really speaks to you.”
I knew before I finished
that sentence,
it would be impossible to explain.
He began holding it up
to my ear,
whispering softly,
saying all the things the leaf
had to say.
Thinking of it now,
I realize,
clear as a sunny autumn day,
this is Your way too.
We may feel discarded,
dull,
nothing becoming about us at all.
But You take notice,
lean down close,
cradle us.
You are enamored,
listening to that in us
which
speaks to You.
